Why Ai recommends some local businesses and not others

AI assistants recommend the businesses the rest of the web vouches for — in relevant, credible places

Picture this. You just moved to a new town and your car starts making a sound you don't like. You walk over to your neighbor and ask, “Where do people take their cars around here?” Your neighbor doesn't hand you a map. They say one name. “Go to Mike's. Everybody goes to Mike's.”

That's basically what Ai does now. Ask ChatGPT or Google's Ai for the best plumber, dentist, or taco spot nearby and it answers like that neighbor — one or two names, said with confidence. Your business is in that answer, or it isn't.

And here's the part that catches owners off guard: the businesses Ai names usually aren't the ones with the prettiest website. They're the ones other people on the internet talk about.

Your website is you bragging about yourself. The rest of the web is everyone else vouching for you. An Ai trusts the second one more.

The nicest house on an empty street

Short version: A great website nobody else references is like a beautiful house on a street no one drives down — an Ai has nothing to repeat about you.

A lot of owners pour money into a beautiful website and then wonder why Ai never mentions them. An Ai learns who you are from everything else that mentions you — a “best of” list a local blog wrote, a review, a forum thread, a directory for your trade. Across several studies, the large majority of what Ai cites — often 80% or more — comes from these third-party sources, not a business's own site.

But it has to be the right kind of mention

Short version: A mention only helps if it's relevant. A physical therapist gains from being named near sports doctors and gyms — not a bakery.

More mentions isn't the goal. The right mentions are. Being listed next to businesses that have nothing to do with you isn't wrong — it's just invisible to Ai, so don't count on it.
