How the X algorithm actually works

X published the code behind its feed — so we can read what really moves a post, instead of guessing

Most advice about “the X algorithm” is guesswork. It doesn't have to be — X published the actual code behind the For You feed, so we can read what really moves a post instead of guessing at it.

We went through it so you don't have to. The short version: there are no clever tricks left, and a couple of popular habits do nothing at all.

It rewards real engagement, not volume

Short version: The system tries to predict whether people will genuinely react — and builds the feed around that.

A post travels when it earns honest interaction: replies, reposts, quotes, and time actually spent reading or watching. Native video and images do especially well. The flip side matters too — when people mute, block, or tap “not interested,” the post is pushed down. So the move isn't to post more; it's to post things worth replying to, and to reply to others.

Hashtags and keyword tricks do nothing

Short version: The ranking code simply has no place that rewards them.

This surprises people: stuffing a post (or your bio) with hashtags and keywords doesn't help and can look spammy. New reach comes from the system matching your post to people who already engage with similar topics — not from tags. Write for a human who cares about the subject.

On X, the engagement is the algorithm. Earn the reply; skip the hashtags.

Why this matters beyond X

Short version: X is the most direct line to one Ai assistant in particular.

Grok — the assistant built into X — reads X in real time and quotes posts there directly. So a genuine, active presence on X is the single most direct way to show up in Grok's answers. If a scan shows you're invisible to Grok, X is where you'd start.

Where this comes from: X open-sourced the ranking system behind its For You feed, and the points above are drawn from that public code (current to its 2026 update). We're describing how it works, not promising any specific result.
